Press Release: Denton County Schedules Ground Spraying in Response to Four Positive WNV Mosquito Traps

August 10, 2021 – Denton County Public Health (DCPH) is reporting four positive West Nile Virus (WNV) mosquito traps in unincorporated Denton County. The positive mosquito traps are located in the following unincorporated areas:

    • Southeast of Northlake near Northwest Regional Airport
    • North of Oak Point within Cross Oak Ranch and Prairie Oaks
Northwest of Frisco within Frisco Ranch and Frisco Lakes
    • North of 380 within North Paloma Creek

DCPH will conduct truck-based ground spraying in the areas near the positive WNV mosquito trap beginning Wednesday, August 11, 2021.

The ground spraying schedule is as follows, weather permitting:

    • Wednesday, August 11, 2021 between the hours of 9 PM and 5 AM
    • Thursday, August 12, 2021 between the hours of 9 PM and 5 AM
    • Friday, August 13, 2021 between the hours of 9 PM and 5 AM

DCPH advises residents to take the following steps to minimize risk of contracting WNV:

    • Drain standing water in your yard and neighborhood to minimize mosquito breeding sites such as bird baths, flowerpots, and clogged rain gutters. Consider the use of BTI briquettes, often called mosquito dunks, in standing water that cannot be eliminated
    • Dress in long sleeves and pants when you are outside and spray thin clothing with repellent.
    • Defend yourself by using EPA approved repellent. Check for ingredients like DEET, Picaridin, or Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus.

Detailed maps of the spray areas are located on the DCPH West Nile Virus website at DentonCounty.gov/WNV, along with additional information including mosquito maps, latest news, and facts about WNV. Residents in the affected area are being informed via emergency alerts and signage.

  6. When to Call 911

    Event Starts: January 05, 2021

Important Announcement From The Little Elm Police Department!

It's a new year! We know, new year, new you and all of that great stuff, so while you're thinking about things you want to do in 2021 and how to make it awesome and all, we wanted to drop a note to remind you that messaging our Facebook page does not replace a 911 call and it is not monitored 24/7

And we have a bit of a spoiler alert; our Facebook inbox is mostly handled by our communications team, not police officers.

And while our communications team is FABULOUS, they are not trained police officers or 911 operators.

If you have an emergency, CALL 911 We repeat, call 911.

If you need to speak to an officer for a non-emergency situation, you can call 940-349-1600, option 9.

  7. TRASH/BULK/RECYCLING QUESTIONS ANSWERED

    Event Starts: December 27, 2020

Q:  What day is our trash/recycling day?

A:  Currently, our trash/bulk days are every Tuesdays.  Our recycling days are EVERY OTHER Tuesday.

Q:  How do I dispose of my  live Christmas Tree?

A:  Frisco Ranch has bulk services EVERY Tuesday, just set your Christmas tree out on the curb with your trash cans and CWD will pick it up.
Frisco Ranch does not follow Little Elm or Frisco's Trash guidelines or services.  We are independent and have our own trash/bulk pick up guidelines that CWD and the Water District Board (Frisco West District) have worked together to bring the best options for Frisco Ranch.

    Q: Why wasn't my trash/recycling wasn't picked up?

A:  Several factors could have come into play
    1. were the lids closed completely, overflowing trash cans will not be picked up by CWD
    2. any cars or other objects blocking access to your cans
    3. were your cans placed out before the trash truck came by (CWD services between 7AM-7PM) make sure to set your cans out Monday after 6PM or 7AM on Tuesday the day of service.

Year-Round Lawn Maintenance Tips

Published: March 13, 2021

As you know, weeds can invade and thrive in all types of environments. The first step in controlling these weed pests is to correctly identify the weed and then determine a proper control strategy.

Herbicides are available that will control most common lawn weeds but they must be used correctly for successful weed control. Check with your local nursery for best results. When possible, take a weed sample with you to ensure that you are purchasing the correct product for your weed problem.

FERTILIZER SCHEDULE:

Late February-Early March - apply a simple 15-5-10 fertilizer for an early green-up.

February-March – use a pre-emergent for grassy weeds to prevent such weeds are Crabgrass, Goose grass and Dallisgrass from popping up late in the spring and summer. Use a grassy pre-emergent like Amaze, Betasan, Balan or Treflan.

Late March-Early April - apply slow-released 3-1-2 ratio fertilizers.

May-Early June – one more application of a grassy pre-emergent will keep fall weeds from invading from August on.

Late June-Early July – apply slow-released 3-1-2 ration fertilizers.

October-November – apply winterizer formulas for winter hardiness.

Late October-Early November – use two different pre-emergent herbicides to prevent the weeds that we experience in February and March. First is a pre-emergent with Portrait or Gallery for board leaf weeds like clover. Second use a pre-emergent with Amaze, Betasan, Balan or Treflan for grassy weeds. There is also Barricade, Dimension or Pendimethlin as a 2-in-1 control.

IRRIGATION:

Water – the best time to water is between 3am and 8am. Watering longer and less frequently is better for your yard than watering daily for short periods of time. You want the water to settle in and saturate the grass. You also want the root system of the grass to go deep. Your yard needs around an inch of water each time you water. Depending on the irrigation system you have, the time can range from 15-45 minutes per zone.
